Galerie Deux6 is pleased to announce And Again We Go, an exhibition of paintings by New York City artist Gregory Hayes. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 11th, 2022 from 2:00 - 7:00pm. The exhibition will be on view through July 9th, 2022.
Known for his intricate and harmonious painting, Hayes explores through his work the equilibrium between systems and intuition, disorder and control, as well as the interconnectivity of colors. While produced with laborious complexity and meticulous execution, his paintings convey a feeling of effortlessness and serenity.
At first glimpse, Hayes’ paintings may seem woven from fabric or constructed glass mosaics; such an effect is created by his technique of individually dripping small, jewel-like globes of swirling, colored acrylic paint into the cells of a hand-drawn 1/4 inch grid. This process reveals the paint's natural ability to freely form shapes and patterns on the surface of the canvas, highlighting the multitude of intentional and unintentional color interactions. The end result creates a multi-dimensional space and kaleidoscopic-like texture that challenges the viewer's perception.
Of his work, Hayes writes, “To me, painting—one of the most conventional of disciplines—is ultimately one of the most experimental, exhilarating, and enduring of all media…. My objective is to heighten the viewer’s sensitivity to subtle variations and to reveal that pictorial complexity can be achieved through a restricted vocabulary.”
Gregory Hayes (b. 1980 Buffalo, New York) received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in Denver Colorado, and his Master of Fine Arts from the City University of New York, Brooklyn College. Hayes was awarded artist residencies at Millay Colony for the Arts, and Fire Island Pines Arts Project in New York State. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
And Again We Go
Each moment, each movement seems monumental from a distance. Time accumulates all the little things we do, then shows us a carefully crafted storyline, trying to define who we ought to be. But maybe it’s all an illusion. No need to define from the rewinding of our minds. Back and forth from here to there, there to here. Despairing. Really. To carry all that with you. Redefine this timeline. Each moment, each movement is like a starting line. Each step. Each breath. Each smile. Each tear. And again we go.
